1-800-ChatGPT: OpenAI’s Voice Service Wows Americans
A new feature introduced by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has left many Americans both amazed and inquisitive. Dialing the toll-free number 1-800-242-8478, or 1-800-ChatGPT, now connects callers to a conversational AI voice assistant capable of answering diverse queries—from cooking recipes to historical insights. This innovative voice service aims to bridge the gap for individuals who lack access to the app or high-speed internet.
A New Era for AI Access
The service was launched in the United States ten days ago, designed to help non-tech-savvy users by offering a conversational experience over a phone call. OpenAI envisions this as a game-changer in AI accessibility, ensuring that knowledge is available through something as simple as a phone call. The chatbot’s human-like voice and demeanor make interactions seamless, although usage is restricted to 15 minutes per number per month. For global users, OpenAI has rolled out a WhatsApp-based text service using the same number.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, revealed that the voice feature was developed in just a few weeks. This aligns with OpenAI’s broader mission of expanding AI reach to those who may otherwise be excluded from digital advancements.
Not the First Voice AI Attempt
Interestingly, OpenAI isn’t the first tech giant to experiment with voice-based AI services. Google launched GOOG-411 in 2007, a speech-recognition business directory service. However, this was discontinued in 2010 without explanation. OpenAI’s entry into this space reignites interest in voice-driven AI technology and its potential applications.
Concerns Surrounding Privacy and Ethics
While the service has garnered significant attention, it has also sparked debates about privacy, data security, and emotional dependency on AI. Critics question whether calls are recorded, how voice data might be used for AI training, and the implications of potential data leaks. Others worry about emotional manipulation, loneliness, and over-reliance on a human-sounding AI for companionship.
OpenAI has addressed some of these concerns, emphasizing that users must agree to their terms of use and privacy policies before engaging with the service. A disclaimer also informs callers that conversations may be reviewed for safety purposes. However, these measures have not fully allayed public fears.
OpenAI’s Corporate Shift
Adding to the buzz, OpenAI recently announced plans to restructure from a capped for-profit entity to a full Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). This move aims to balance shareholder interests with broader societal benefits while allowing OpenAI to raise conventional capital. The restructuring has faced resistance, with Elon Musk reportedly filing legal objections to prevent the transition.
