Rs 16 Crore Debt and a Suicide Pact: The Tragic Chain of Events Behind Kolkata Murders

The recent discovery of a triple murder in Kolkata’s Tangra area has revealed a chilling sequence of events involving financial distress, a failed suicide pact, and a desperate escape plan. The tragic Kolkata crime case, which initially appeared as a car accident, soon unfolded into a grim tale of deep financial turmoil and a horrifying pact that led to multiple deaths.

The Discovery of the Crime

On February 19, police responded to an early morning crash involving two brothers, Prasun and Pranay Dey, along with Pranay’s teenage son. What initially seemed like an accident soon led to a much darker revelation. Upon being questioned, the brothers disclosed the presence of three dead bodies in their home—Prasun’s wife Romi Dey, their 14-year-old daughter, and their sister-in-law, Sudeshna Dey.

As investigations progressed, police uncovered a desperate attempt by the family to escape their overwhelming debt through a suicide pact. However, when their plan did not go as intended, it took a far more sinister turn.

The Suicide Pact That Turned Fatal

Prasun Dey later admitted to the police that he and his family had planned a collective suicide after being unable to cope with a staggering Rs 16 crore debt. On February 17, the family consumed rice pudding laced with sleeping pills, hoping to end their lives together. However, when they all woke up the following morning, they decided to resort to a more drastic method.

According to police, Prasun smothered his teenage daughter with a pillow, while his wife, Romi, assisted by holding her legs. He then proceeded to slit his wife’s wrists and throat when her own attempt at ending her life failed. The same method was used to kill his sister-in-law.

Once the murders were carried out, Prasun, his brother Pranay, and Pranay’s son left their home in their car. In the early hours of February 19, their vehicle collided with a pillar. The brothers later admitted that they intended to take their own lives in the crash, but they survived.

Kolkata crime  – The Financial Burden That Led to Tragedy

Further investigation into the family’s financial crisis revealed that the brothers were struggling with a massive debt of Rs 16 crore. Monthly EMIs amounting to nearly Rs 47 lakh were overdue on two of their three cars. With no way to repay the mounting loans, the family decided to end their lives.

Prasun and Pranay were initially treated at Kolkata’s Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College under police surveillance before being taken into custody. Following hours of interrogation, Prasun was officially arrested and presented before a court, which remanded him to police custody until March 6.

What Happens Next?

Authorities are now investigating whether Pranay Dey was directly involved in the murders or if he played a supporting role in the suicide pact. His statement will be recorded once he recovers from his injuries. Meanwhile, forensic teams are continuing their analysis of the crime scene to corroborate Prasun’s account of events.

This case has left Kolkata in shock, raising questions about the devastating impact of financial distress and the need for better support systems for individuals facing extreme economic hardships. The investigation is ongoing as police piece together the full picture behind this horrifying sequence of events.
