3 Killed, 17 Injured in Mumbai as BEST Bus Crashes into Vehicles, Residential Complex Gate

A fatal accident in Mumbai’s Kurla (West) on Monday night claimed the lives of three individuals and left 17 injured when a state-run BEST bus veered out of control, ramming into vehicles and the gates of a residential complex. The incident occurred around 9:50 PM as the BEST bus, operating on route number 332 from Kurla station to Andheri, caused havoc on a busy road.

CCTV Footage Reveals High-Speed Collision

CCTV footage of the incident captures the red BEST bus barreling at high speed down the road, first colliding with an autorickshaw before hitting other vehicles, pedestrians, and finally crashing into a residential gate. According to a municipal corporation official, initial reports suggest that the bus’s brakes may have failed, causing the driver to lose control.

Casualties and Hospitalization

The tragic accident left three dead, while the injured were rushed to Sion and Kurla Bhabha Hospitals for treatment. Local residents and bystanders played a crucial role in rescuing the victims, transporting them to hospitals in nearby vehicles.

Eyewitness Accounts Highlight the Chaos

Eyewitnesses reported the bus swerving uncontrollably for approximately 200 meters before coming to a halt. Zaid Ahmed, a local resident, recounted hearing a loud noise and running to the scene to assist. “The bus hit pedestrians, an autorickshaw, and three cars. My friends and I helped rescue passengers and transported the injured to the hospital,” he told PTI.

Other witnesses mentioned that the bus also collided with a police vehicle before crashing into the residential complex gate. The incident left the area in shock and raised concerns about safety measures in public transportation.

Details About the Vehicle and Driver

The 12-meter-long electric bus, manufactured by Olectra, was taken on a wet lease by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST). As part of the lease agreement, the driver was provided by a private operator. Officials revealed that the bus was relatively new, having been registered just three months ago on August 20 under the name of EVEY Trans.

Authorities Launch Investigation

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and police have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Early findings suggest mechanical failure as a possible reason, but further forensic analysis and technical checks are underway.

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for stringent safety checks and robust training for drivers operating public transport vehicles, especially in a densely populated city like Mumbai. As authorities investigate, residents hope for better oversight to prevent such tragedies in the future.
