4 Labourers Buried Alive While Digging Well in Jharkhand

In a tragic incident, four labourers, including a woman, lost their lives while digging a well in Jharkhand’s Lohardaga district on Thursday. The unfortunate event occurred around 11 AM in Chitri Ambatoli village, located within the Senha police station area, approximately 80 kilometers from Ranchi, the state capital.

The labourers were working on a well-digging project under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) when disaster struck. According to Vedant Shankar, the officer in charge at Senha police station, a portion of the earth caved in, burying the workers alive. Despite immediate rescue efforts involving excavators and other equipment, all four individuals were found dead.

The deceased – Labourers Buried Alive – have been identified as Abu Rehan Ansari (35), Shabnam Khatun (21), Ramjan Ansari (35), and Bhagat. Their bodies have been retrieved and sent for post-mortem examinations to determine the precise cause of death and confirm the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

The incident highlights the inherent risks involved in manual labour, especially in projects like well digging which require working in unstable conditions. The MGNREGA project aims to provide guaranteed employment to rural households, ensuring at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. While the scheme has been lauded for its role in rural development and poverty alleviation, incidents like these underscore the urgent need for stringent safety measures.

On the fateful morning, the four labourers were engaged in the routine task of digging the well when suddenly, without warning, a large section of earth gave way. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise followed by cries for help. Immediate rescue operations were launched, involving local authorities and the police, who quickly deployed excavators to the scene. Despite their efforts, the rescuers were unable to save the trapped workers.

The local community in Chitri Ambatoli village is in a state of shock and mourning. The loss of these individuals has deeply affected the villagers, who gathered at the site in large numbers, offering their support to the bereaved families. The incident has sparked a discussion on the need for improved safety protocols and emergency preparedness in rural employment projects.

Authorities have assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse and to prevent such tragedies in the future. “We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We are committed to investigating this thoroughly and ensuring that such incidents do not occur again,” said a senior district official.

The police and local administration have pledged to take all necessary steps to support the affected families.

Furthermore, the district administration plans to conduct a thorough review of all ongoing projects in the region to assess safety measures and implement necessary improvements.

The tragic deaths serve as a grim reminder of the risks faced by manual workers in rural employment projects. As the community grieves this loss, there is an urgent call for improved safety measures and stringent monitoring.
