53 Dead in Tibet Earthquake; Tremors Felt in Bihar

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Tibet near the Nepalese border early this morning, claiming at least 53 lives, as reported by Chinese media agency Xinhua. The tremors were felt in multiple Indian states, including Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal, sending shockwaves across the region.

Epicenter in Tourism Hub Tingri

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the epicenter was in Tingri County, located in Shigatse city. Tingri, approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Tibet’s capital Lhasa, lies on the border with Nepal and serves as a popular gateway for tourists visiting Mount Everest. The earthquake occurred at 6:35 am, creating widespread panic.

Series of Aftershocks Followed Initial Quake

According to the NCS, two aftershocks followed the initial quake within a short span. A 4.7 magnitude tremor was recorded at 7:02 am at a depth of 10 kilometers, while another measuring 4.9 magnitude struck at 7:07 am at a depth of 30 kilometers. The frequent seismic activity further heightened fears in the region.

India’s Response: Tremors Across Eastern States

In India, the tremors were prominently felt in Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal, prompting residents to rush out of their homes. Visuals from Bihar showed people standing outside apartments in apprehension. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of damage to property or injuries in India, officials confirmed.

A Geologically Active Region

This region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, is among the most seismically active in the world. The formation of the Himalayas is a direct result of this tectonic activity, making earthquakes a common phenomenon. Memories of the devastating 2015 earthquake in Nepal, which killed nearly 9,000 people and left over 22,000 injured, remain fresh in the minds of many. That catastrophe destroyed more than half a million homes and underscored the region’s vulnerability.

Emergency Measures and Ongoing Assessments

Local authorities in Tibet and Nepal have launched rescue operations and are assessing the damage. Relief teams have been dispatched to the affected areas, especially Tingri, which bore the brunt of the quake. While rescue operations are underway, experts continue to monitor seismic activity for any further aftershocks.
