6-Year-Old Dies in Tragic Car Crash Near Mumbai: Airbag Impact Blamed

A six-year-old boy, Harsh Mavji Arethia, tragically lost his life on Sunday evening following airbag deployment after a car crash near Vashi, approximately an hour’s drive from Mumbai. The boy was out on a drive with his father and two cousins to enjoy panipuris when the incident occurred.

Seated in the front passenger seat of their Wagon R, Harsh suffered fatal injuries due to the force of the airbag deployment, triggered by a collision with another vehicle. According to police, an SUV driving ahead of their car lost control and hit a divider, causing its rear end to lift into the air and crash onto the Wagon R’s bonnet, leading to the airbags deploying.

Police and Medical Insights

Senior Police Inspector Sanjay Ghumal from Vashi Police Station provided details of the incident, stating that another car collided with the SUV from behind, intensifying the impact. Harsh was struck by the deploying airbag, and bystanders rushed him to the hospital, but he succumbed during treatment.

Doctors reported that Harsh displayed no visible external injuries, suggesting polytrauma shock as the likely cause of death. The force of the airbag deployment, a safety feature designed for adult passengers, may have proved too severe for the young child.

Scene of the Crash

Visuals from the crash site reveal significant damage to the front of the white Wagon R. The car’s bonnet was crumpled and torn, with sharp edges pushed upward from the impact. The collision underscored the devastating consequences of improper seating arrangements for children in vehicles.

Safety Considerations and Legal Action

The tragic incident highlights critical concerns regarding child safety in cars. Experts emphasize that airbags are not designed for young children, especially those seated in the front passenger seat. Guidelines recommend children below 13 years of age should always be seated in the rear seats, secured with appropriate child safety restraints.

A case has been registered by the Vashi Police, and further investigations are underway to determine liability and prevent similar incidents.
