The government has reported a concerning rise in attacks and Indians killed abroad in 2023, with 86 cases recorded. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, revealed this data to Parliament on Thursday, marking a steep increase from 29 cases in 2021 and 57 in 2022.

Key Countries Reporting Incidents

Among the reported cases, 12 occurred in the United States, while Canada, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia each reported 10 incidents. These nations accounted for the majority of the violence against Indians abroad.

Addressing concerns, Singh emphasized, “The safety and security of Indians abroad is one of the foremost priorities for the government of India. Our missions and posts remain vigilant and closely monitor any untoward incidents.”

The government has underscored its proactive response by engaging with host countries to ensure proper investigation and accountability. These issues are raised during bilateral discussions with officials at the highest levels.

Measures for Indian Nationals Abroad

To assist Indian nationals facing emergencies, the government has set up a 24×7 helpline in Indian missions and posts abroad. This facility aims to provide immediate support and ensure effective coordination with local authorities in host countries.

Singh reiterated that all cases of violence are promptly taken up with the concerned foreign authorities to ensure justice for the victims and their families.

Citizenship Surrenders

In a related discussion, the government shared data on Indian nationals renouncing their citizenship. The numbers indicate a consistent rise over the years, with 2,16,219 Indians giving up their citizenship in 2023, slightly fewer than the 2,25,620 recorded in 2022.

Between 2019 and 2023, a total of 8,34,482 Indians surrendered their citizenship. Countries like the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Germany were the most common choices for new citizenship.

Although specific state-wise data was not available, the list of 135 countries where Indians acquired citizenship includes Algeria, China, Iran, Pakistan, and Ukraine.

Rising Challenges

The rise in violent incidents against Indians abroad and the steady trend of citizenship renouncement highlight the evolving challenges for expatriates. The government’s focus on safety measures and diplomatic engagement reflects its commitment to addressing these concerns.

As the diaspora grows, ensuring their welfare remains a critical priority for India’s foreign policy. The Ministry of External Affairs has reiterated its dedication to safeguarding the interests of Indian nationals globally.
