Backed by $200 million in funding from major investors like Founders Fund and Khosla Ventures, Wu’s San Francisco-based startup, Cognition, has developed an autonomous coding assistant named Devin. Cognition’s breakthrough moment came in December 2023 when Devin successfully solved a complex server setup issue that had stumped the team for hours. The AI deleted a faulty system file the developers had overlooked, proving its potential to revolutionize software development. “That was the moment it really hit me how much software engineering is going to change,” said cofounder Walden Yan.
Now, Devin handles tasks like debugging, code updates, and platform migrations. A simple prompt—like “clean up this codebase”—leads Devin to create and execute a plan, often with impressive results.
What Makes Devin Stand Out
Devin does more than assist; it automates. Unlike tools like Github Copilot, Devin autonomously handles coding tasks such as debugging, migrating code, and updating systems. A simple prompt like “optimize this codebase” enables Devin to create and execute action plans, bypassing the need for human intervention.
Despite challenges, Devin has attracted enterprise customers, including Ramp and MongoDB, for tasks like cleaning up outdated code and improving workflows. Early adopters have reported significant productivity gains, with some engineers completing tasks up to eight times faster.
India’s Tech Workforce: Opportunity or Threat?
India, home to 13 million coders, could see significant changes if AI tools like Devin gain widespread adoption. While Cognition argues that tools like Devin can free engineers to focus on higher-level projects, concerns remain about job displacement.
With Indian tech graduates increasingly drawn to software engineering, AI-driven tools could impact career opportunities. “Devin is part of a larger shift,” says industry analyst Ritu Jyoti. “AI tools that can complete tasks autonomously might alter hiring patterns in coding-heavy roles.”

The Indian software industry, heavily reliant on its skilled coding workforce, will need to adapt. Tech firms may adopt AI to scale operations, but developers must pivot toward roles requiring creativity, strategy, and AI supervision.
