Fresh Violence Sparks Curfew and Internet Suspension
On Saturday night, Manipur plunged into chaos as violent protests broke out in several districts. The state government imposed an indefinite curfew and suspended internet services in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur districts to curb the unrest. Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi announced that the internet ban would last for at least two days, citing the need to prevent the spread of misinformation and restore public order.
Angry mobs set fire to the homes of several political leaders, including Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Govindas Konthoujam in Ningthoukhong, BJP MLA Y Radheshyam in Hiyanglam, BJP MLA Paonam Brojen in Thoubal, and Congress MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar in Imphal East. The arson highlighted the growing frustration among protesters and further fueled tensions in the already troubled region.
Mob Targets CM’s Residence Amid Heightened Tensions
The violence reached a tipping point when a mob attempted to storm the personal residence of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday evening. Security forces, including personnel from the Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF), and local law enforcement, acted swiftly to disperse the protesters. They used tear gas shells and rubber bullets to prevent damage to the Chief Minister’s residence, averting a potentially severe escalation.
Elsewhere, protesters gathered at the residence of Independent legislator Sapam Nishikanta Singh in Imphal West’s Keishamthong area, only to find he was not present. In their anger, they vandalized the office building of a local newspaper owned by the legislator, as reported by PTI.
Amit Shah Calls for Immediate Action
Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation, instructed officials to prioritize the restoration of peace and security. Shah is scheduled to hold a more detailed review meeting on Monday at North Block, where additional measures are expected to be discussed. The Home Minister has emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among security forces to de-escalate tensions and protect public safety.
The Path Ahead: Restoring Calm Amid Crisis
The situation in Manipur remains fragile, with security forces on high alert across the affected districts. The indefinite curfew and internet suspension have added to the tension, but authorities believe these steps are necessary to prevent further escalation. Local leaders and security officials continue to work on ground-level strategies to defuse the unrest and address public grievances.
The incident underscores the need for swift governmental intervention to maintain stability in Manipur, as the region grapples with the fallout of this latest wave of violence. Political analysts suggest that resolving such conflicts will require not only stronger law enforcement measures but also addressing the deeper underlying issues fueling discontent.
