Northeast India witnessed the counting of votes for three state assembly elections, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vying to increase its foothold in Meghalaya and Nagaland, while retaining power in Tripura.
In Tripura, the BJP is up against a three-way contest with the combined forces of the Left parties and Congress and Pradyot Debbarma-led TIPRA Motha. The BJP is hoping to retain power in Tripura against the Congress and the Left, with the emergence of TIPRA Motha adding another challenge as Debbarma has a strong hold on the tribal population.
Meanwhile, the BJP contested all 60 seats in Meghalaya and ran a determined campaign to expand its footprints in the state.
In Nagaland, the BJP-NDPP alliance is set to retain power, leading in 36 seats in the 60-member assembly.
BJP’s Stakes are High to Retain Power in Tripura
In Tripura, the stakes are high for the BJP as it hopes to retain power against the Congress and Left parties. The party’s biggest challenge comes from TIPRA Motha, led by Pradyot Debbarma, who has a significant hold on the tribal population. BJP is hoping to keep its stronghold in Tripura and fend off the opposition parties to retain power. The results of this election could have a significant impact on the BJP’s prospects in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
BJP Contesting All Seats in Meghalaya
For the first time, the BJP contested all 60 seats in Meghalaya, except one that was postponed due to a candidate’s death. The party has aggressively campaigned to expand its foothold in the state. The Trinamool Congress has also emerged as a strong challenger, hoping to pose a challenge to Congress in the state. The results of this election will be significant for the BJP as it aims to increase its presence in the northeast region.
NDPP-BJP Alliance Set to Retain Power in Nagaland
The NDPP-BJP alliance is leading in 36 out of 60 seats in Nagaland, looking set to retain power in the state. Last time, Nagaland had no opposition as all parties in the 60-member assembly backed the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party-led government. The Congress fielded 23 candidates, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) 22, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) 15, Nationalist Congress Party and National People’s Party 12 each. The NDPP-BJP alliance contested the polls again, with a 40:20 formula (40 seats for the NDPP and 20 for the BJP).
