Delhi Election Results: BJP Set for a Resurgence in the Capital

As counting progresses in the Delhi Assembly elections, early Delhi Election Results trends indicate a major shift in the political landscape of the national capital. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has crossed the majority mark, positioning itself for a comeback in Delhi after more than 25 years. Exit polls had predicted a BJP victory, challenging the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which was aiming for a third consecutive term.

At 8:30 am, AAP initially gained an early lead, but as counting advanced, BJP steadily made gains, reclaiming lost ground in what has turned into a fiercely contested battle. The Congress, which has struggled to revive its position in Delhi, is leading in just one seat, as per early results.

AAP’s Journey: From Record Victory to Toughest Challenge

AAP first rose to power in 2013, securing 28 seats, but its government lasted only 49 days. The party staged a remarkable comeback in 2015, winning 67 out of 70 seats—one of the biggest mandates in Delhi’s history. In 2020, AAP secured 62 seats, cementing its dominance in the city.

However, this time, the trends suggest a different outcome. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with senior AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Atishi, is trailing in their respective constituencies, raising concerns within the party.

AAP Confident Despite Setbacks

Despite the numbers favoring BJP, AAP leaders remain hopeful. Delhi Chief Minister and party leader Atishi has asserted that the people of Delhi, including voters from her Kalkaji constituency, will back AAP once again. She described the elections as a battle between “development and hooliganism”, expressing confidence that Kejriwal will return as Chief Minister for a fourth term with a massive mandate.

Congress Yet to Decide on Alliances

In a key contest, Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit, who is contesting against Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, has distanced himself from any post-poll alliance speculation. He stated that any decision on a tie-up with AAP would rest with the party’s high command.

Seat Predictions and Exit Poll Forecasts

Various exit polls have projected mixed results for the capital:

  • Chanakya Strategies forecasts:
    • AAP: 25-28 seats
    • BJP: 39-44 seats
    • Congress: Up to 3 seats
  • DV Research predicts:
    • AAP: 26-34 seats
    • BJP: 36-44 seats
    • Congress: 0 seats

If the numbers hold, BJP will make its long-awaited return to governance in Delhi, while AAP, after dominating for a decade, could find itself in a reduced position. Meanwhile, Congress continues its struggle to reclaim relevance in the city where it once ruled for 15 consecutive years under Sheila Dikshit.

Turnout and Voting Trends

The voter turnout in the 2020 Delhi Assembly election was 62.82%, a drop from 67.47% recorded in 2015. With a slightly lower participation rate, analysts suggest that shifting voter sentiment may have played a key role in this election.

Tight Security as Vote Counting Continues

Counting is taking place under tight security at 19 locations across Delhi, with officials closely monitoring each round. As the final numbers come in, all eyes remain on whether AAP can mount a comeback or if BJP will officially reclaim Delhi after more than two decades.
