Brazil floods toll rising. Brazil is mourning as the death toll from floods and landslides caused by torrential rains has reached at least 50. The authorities are working tirelessly to find any survivors as emergency workers sift through rubble.
The recent rainfall, which was the heaviest ever recorded in Brazil during a 24-hour period along the coast of northern Sao Paulo state, has left behind a trail of destruction. The state governor, Tarcisio de Freitas, expressed his concern that the official weather alert system had failed to avoid tragedy. He stated that “Next rainy season, there will be sirens to warn people in high-risk areas.”
The storm, which mainly hit Sao Sebastiano, caused almost all of the reported deaths. It is estimated that around 9.5 million people living in Brazil’s poor favela neighbourhoods are at high risk of flooding or landslides. Experts believe that climate change is exacerbating the situation, and the country has been hit by a series of deadly weather disasters in recent years.
