ICC Champions Trophy 2025 to Follow Hybrid Model, India to Play Matches in Dubai
Champions Trophy to Be Played in a Hybrid Format:Â The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finalized a hybrid hosting model for the upcoming Champions Trophy in February-March 2025. The arrangement ensures that India will play its matches in Dubai, while the rest of the tournament will take place in Pakistan. This decision, reached in principle during an informal meeting between ICC President Jay Shah and the Board of Directors in Dubai, aims to accommodate political sensitivities while maintaining competitive integrity.
A “Win-Win” for All Stakeholders
The hybrid model is seen as a compromise to satisfy both India and Pakistan, whose political tensions have long spilled over into cricket. “It’s been agreed in principle by all parties that the 2025 Champions Trophy will be held in the UAE and Pakistan, with India playing its matches in Dubai,” an ICC source said. The decision not only resolves the immediate concerns surrounding the tournament but also establishes a precedent for other ICC events through 2027.
Hybrid Model Extended to Future Events
Under the agreement, a hybrid hosting format will apply to ICC events until 2027. For example, during the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, Pakistan will play its matches in Sri Lanka, co-host of the event alongside India. The ICC is still considering compensation for Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) compliance with this model for the Champions Trophy.
The hybrid arrangement will also affect women’s cricket. Should the Indian women’s team face Pakistan during the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup hosted by India, the match will likely be held at a neutral venue. Meanwhile, the Champions Trophy schedule has been delayed, with broadcasters still awaiting final details from the ICC.
The Broader Context and Future Implications
India has not toured Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, citing security concerns. The hybrid model provides a workaround, allowing both nations to participate in ICC events without compromising on government travel advisories. The PCB’s demand for a larger share in ICC’s annual revenue cycle remains under discussion.
