Cyclone Fengal Hits Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Cyclone Fengal, a severe storm that has brought torrential rains and strong winds, made landfall near the coast of Puducherry on Saturday, leaving behind a trail of disruption and despair. The cyclone’s impact has been felt most acutely in Tamil Nadu’s capital, Chennai, and surrounding regions, as it flooded streets, disrupted air and rail travel, and brought daily life to a standstill. The cyclone also forced the evacuation of hundreds of people and caused significant damage to infrastructure.

Chennai Grapples with Cyclone Chaos

The cyclone’s heavy rains inundated large parts of Chennai, crippling its transport and healthcare systems. The city’s airport was temporarily shut down, with several parts of the facility submerged. Flight operations were halted until early Sunday morning, causing significant inconvenience to passengers. The effects were felt beyond Chennai, with 20 flights to and from cities like Tirupati and Hyderabad being canceled.

The deluge also impacted the rail network, leading the Southern Railway to modify services to ensure passenger safety. Roads leading to prominent tourist destinations, such as Marina Beach and Mamallapuram, were barricaded to prevent access, underscoring the city’s heightened safety measures.

In anticipation of the storm’s severity, schools and colleges in multiple districts of Tamil Nadu were closed. Hundreds of residents in vulnerable, low-lying areas were moved to storm shelters. Similar precautionary actions were taken in Puducherry, where SMS alerts warned residents of the impending cyclone and urged them to prepare for possible flooding.

Tragic Incidents and Public Safety

The heavy rains brought with them more than just logistical challenges. In a tragic incident, a migrant worker in Chennai was electrocuted while attempting to use an ATM. Such events underscore the critical need for improved infrastructure and safety protocols during extreme weather events.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued advisories for fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea, warning of dangerously high waves and potential flooding along the coastline. These precautionary measures, while crucial, also highlight the storm’s widespread impact on livelihoods, particularly in coastal fishing communities.

Cyclone Fengal’s Wider Impact

The cyclone’s effects have not been limited to India. Earlier this week, Fengal skirted Sri Lanka, where it claimed at least 12 lives, including six children. This international toll underscores the cyclone’s devastating power and the urgent need for robust disaster management mechanisms across the region.

Cyclone Fengal serves as a grim reminder of the challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events. For urban centers like Chennai, the inundation has highlighted gaps in stormwater drainage and urban planning. Investing in resilient infrastructure, enhancing early warning systems, and conducting community preparedness programs are critical steps toward mitigating the impact of future cyclones.

As Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recover from the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal, it is essential to prioritize long-term measures. Building climate-resilient infrastructure, streamlining evacuation procedures, and ensuring post-disaster rehabilitation for affected communities will be key. The authorities’ proactive measures, such as evacuation and timely alerts, are commendable, but the crisis highlights the scope for improving India’s disaster response systems.
