D Gukesh Crowned Youngest Chess World Champion
Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh has etched his name in the annals of chess history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion. At just 18 years, 8 months, and 14 days, Gukesh surpassed the previous record held by chess legend Garry Kasparov, who clinched the title at 22 years, 6 months, and 27 days.

Gukesh’s remarkable feat came after he triumphed over reigning champion Ding Liren of China in the decisive Game 14 of the 2024 World Chess Championship, held in Singapore. The high-stakes match saw Gukesh capitalizing on a critical mistake by Ding, who inadvertently placed his Rook adjacent to his King, leaving his position vulnerable.
A Decisive Move in a Tense Final
With the match teetering on the edge of yet another draw, Ding’s misstep proved to be a turning point. If the game had ended in a draw, the championship would have been decided through a tie-break scheduled for the following day. Instead, Gukesh’s composed response to Ding’s error sealed his victory, ensuring his place at the top of the chess world.
Following Anand’s Legacy
This historic win makes Gukesh the second World Chess Champion from India, following the legendary Viswanathan Anand, who held the title four times. Gukesh’s achievement is a significant milestone for Indian chess and a testament to the country’s growing prominence on the global chess stage.
