Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar, in a press conference, confirmed that the model code of conduct has been enforced across the national capital with immediate effect. He emphasized, “Every effort has been made to ensure a free and fair election, including measures for voter convenience and strict adherence to due processes.”
Delhi Elections – Key Details of the Election Process
The filing of nominations will close on January 17, with candidates allowed to withdraw their names until January 20. For the first time, over 2 lakh first-time voters will participate, a reflection of Delhi’s growing and younger electorate.
The CEC also highlighted innovative arrangements for specific groups. Seniors above 85 years and persons with disabilities will have access to home voting services. Additionally, infrastructure at polling booths will be upgraded to accommodate easy access for elderly voters and those with mobility challenges.
Stakes High for AAP, BJP, and Congress
Reacting to the announcement, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal called upon party workers to intensify their preparations. “This is an election between the politics of work and the politics of abuses,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter), expressing confidence in AAP’s chances of securing a third consecutive term.
The BJP, on the other hand, signaled a robust campaign. BJP President welcomed the announcement, urging Delhiites to vote for a government that aligns with “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for development.” The Congress party, aiming for a political revival, is set to contest solo while targeting both AAP and BJP in its campaign narrative.
EVM Integrity and Voter List Transparency
During the press conference, Mr. Kumar categorically dismissed allegations regarding the manipulation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). “EVMs are tamper-proof and not hackable. Every claim of manipulation has been investigated and found baseless,” he stated, reaffirming public trust in the system.
The Election Commission also tackled accusations from both AAP and BJP over alleged discrepancies in voter lists. Mr. Kumar assured, “The Commission rigorously follows due processes for every addition or deletion, ensuring complete transparency.”
A High-Stakes Election
The upcoming Delhi election marks a pivotal contest. The ruling AAP is seeking a third term, while the BJP aims to end its nearly decade-long absence from power in the capital. The Congress, determined to regain lost ground, adds another dimension to the battle.
With just weeks to go, the campaign intensity is expected to escalate, with voters at the heart of decisions shaping the future of Delhi.
