On Sunday afternoon, Gujarat was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3. The National Center for Seismology confirmed that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, located around 270 km north-northwest of Rajkot. Though the epicentre of the earthquake was in Pakistan’s Sindh province, the quake was felt in many parts of Gujarat.
The tremors were followed by another earthquake of similar magnitude in Afghanistan, 117 km south of Fayzabad, within a few minutes of the first one. It is believed that these earthquakes were caused by the movement of tectonic plates in the region.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in Gujarat, with the state having witnessed many significant earthquakes in the past. One of the deadliest earthquakes in Indian history occurred in Gujarat in 2001, with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale. The earthquake caused massive destruction, resulting in the death of over 20,000 people and leaving many more injured.
