16 Cars Destroyed in East Delhi Fire, 5 Shops Damaged in Chandni Chowk Blaze
In a major incident, a fire broke out at a civic authority-run parking lot in East Delhi’s Madhu Vihar area early on Wednesday, resulting in 16 cars being gutted. Simultaneously, a fire in Chandni Chowk damaged five shops. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident.
Fire in East Delhi Parking Lot
The fire at the Madhu Vihar parking lot was reported at 1:17 AM. The Delhi Fire Service (DFS) promptly dispatched nine fire tenders to the site. After four hours of firefighting, the blaze was brought under control. An official from DFS confirmed, “No one got injured in the incident.”
The vehicles belonged to local residents who rented parking spaces at the lot. Initial reports suggested that 17 cars were destroyed, but Madhu Vihar Station House Officer (SHO) Rajesh Sinha later clarified that 16 vehicles were damaged.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire might have started from bushes near the parking lot. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Apoorva Gupta stated, “The parking facility is close to the Delhi Jal Board office. A total of 16 four-wheeler vehicles were damaged in the incident. Remaining vehicles were prevented from being damaged.”
She further confirmed, “There was no loss to human life. So far, the reason for the fire has not been established. A crime team inspected the spot, and an FIR has been registered under sections 285 and 336 of the IPC.”
The timely intervention by the fire and police departments prevented further damage. “Our teams acted promptly after the emergency call. Our priority was to save lives,” said a police officer.
Chandni Chowk Blaze
In another incident, five shops were damaged in a fire in North Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area. The DFS received a call about the blaze near Fatehpuri Masjid at 3:12 AM. Eight fire tenders were dispatched, and the fire was doused by 5:00 AM.
Reaction
Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor accused the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) of negligence regarding the Madhu Vihar parking lot fire. He claimed that the incident occurred due to the lack of basic firefighting equipment at the facility. Kapoor demanded compensation from the MCD for the vehicle owners whose cars were damaged.
In his statement, Kapoor urged the MCD to instruct all parking contractors to install basic firefighting equipment to prevent future incidents, especially given the current heatwave in the city.
The recent incidents underscore the need for enhanced safety measures at public facilities. Ensuring that parking lots and commercial areas are equipped with adequate firefighting equipment can prevent such disasters. Authorities are expected to review and implement stricter safety protocols to protect public and private properties from fire hazards.
The fires in East Delhi and Chandni Chowk have highlighted critical gaps in fire safety preparedness.
