Germany Accuses Elon Musk of Election Interference
German officials have accused billionaire Elon Musk of Election Interference – of attempting to influence the country’s federal elections after his public endorsements of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. The controversy erupted after Musk posted support for the AfD on his social media platform X and published an editorial defending the party in a prominent German newspaper.
Government spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann criticized Musk’s actions, noting that while freedom of speech is fundamental, it also encompasses baseless or problematic opinions. Musk’s involvement has intensified concerns about external interference in Germany’s democratic process.
Musk’s Endorsements Spark Outrage
Musk’s endorsements began with a post earlier this month claiming that “only the AfD can save Germany.” He later shared a video from a German right-wing influencer criticizing Friedrich Merz, the leading candidate from the CDU/CSU bloc, while praising Argentina’s far-right president, Javier Milei.
Over the weekend, Musk authored a guest editorial in Welt am Sonntag, warning of Germany’s alleged economic and cultural decline while lauding the AfD’s policies on taxation and regulation. This prompted the resignation of the newspaper’s opinion editor, who publicly objected to publishing the article.
German politicians across the spectrum have condemned Musk’s actions. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach labeled Musk’s involvement as inappropriate and troubling, while Friedrich Merz of the CDU called it intrusive and unprecedented in Western democracies.
AfD and Political Dynamics
The AfD, known for its anti-immigration and anti-Muslim stance, is classified as a suspected extremist group by German authorities. Currently polling at 19%, the AfD trails the CDU/CSU bloc, which stands at 31%. A strong showing by the AfD could complicate post-election coalition-building, as mainstream parties have refused to collaborate with them at federal or state levels.
Musk defended his support for the AfD in his editorial, citing party leader Alice Weidel’s same-sex relationship with a Sri Lankan woman as evidence against claims of extremism. Critics argue that such reasoning oversimplifies the party’s controversial policies and rhetoric.
German Leadership Responds
President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in a formal address announcing the dissolution of parliament and the early elections scheduled for February 23, indirectly criticized Musk, cautioning against “blatant outside influence” in the campaign. His remarks emphasized the importance of safeguarding Germany’s democratic integrity.
The controversy surrounding Musk’s endorsements has raised broader concerns about the role of social media platforms and influential figures in shaping political narratives. As Germany prepares for its February elections, the scrutiny on external involvement is likely to intensify, ensuring that the democratic process remains uncompromised.
