Former Andhra Pradesh CM Kiran Kumar Reddy Joins BJP

Kiran Kumar Reddy’s move to BJP could impact the upcoming assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh

Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy joined the BJP on Friday, marking the second ex-Congress leader from South India to switch allegiance within days, following Anil Antony, Congress veteran AK Antony’s son.

Kiran Kumar Reddy Joins BJP – Reddy’s Journey

Reddy, the last Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh before Telangana state’s creation in 2014, resigned from Congress in March 2023 due to disagreements with party leadership. With Andhra Pradesh’s assembly elections set for next year, Reddy’s move to the BJP could potentially impact the heated contest between the ruling YSR Congress and the main opposition Telugu Desam Party.

Past Political Endeavors and Future Expectations

The 62-year-old politician had previously resigned from Congress in 2014, after Andhra Pradesh’s bifurcation, and established his own party, ‘Jai Samaikyandhra‘. Despite failing to make a mark in the 2014 elections, Reddy rejoined Congress in 2018 but remained politically inactive for an extended period.

Hailing from the Rayalaseema region, Reddy is anticipated to bolster the BJP’s presence in the area where he has significant influence. The BJP may also consider him as a potential chief ministerial candidate, as they aim to establish themselves as a third alternative in the state.

Reddy Praises Prime Minister Narendra Modi

As senior BJP leaders welcomed Reddy into the party at their New Delhi headquarters, he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Reflecting on his family’s six-decade association with Congress, Reddy stated he “never imagined” he would depart from the party.

Criticism of Congress Leadership

Reddy criticized Congress leadership for their “inability to accept the people’s verdict and make course correction,” claiming they “believe they are correct and all others, including the people of India, are wrong.” He added that Congress’ high command neither interacts with others nor seeks their opinions.

Reddy lauded BJP’s leaders, led by PM Modi, for their “hard work and commitment towards the nation,” noting their “clarity of thought and consistency, and taking courageous decisions is the hallmark of the government.”
