France To Strengthen Nuclear Defense with Luxeuil Air Base Upgrade
France is set to enhance its military preparedness by upgrading the Luxeuil-Saint-Sauveur air base, a strategic move aimed at reinforcing its nuclear deterrent capabilities. President Emmanuel Macron announced the decision on Tuesday, underscoring the need for France and Europe to bolster their defense infrastructure amid shifting global security dynamics.
The Luxeuil base, located less than 200 kilometers from the German border, will undergo a €1.5 billion modernization project that will see it house two squadrons of nuclear-capable Rafale fighter jets by 2035. Macron emphasized that this initiative aligns with France’s commitment to maintaining strategic deterrence and military readiness.

This decision comes amid rising concerns in Europe over defense autonomy, particularly as uncertainty looms over the United States’ long-term commitment to NATO. The debate was recently intensified by Germany’s chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz, who suggested that European nations should engage in discussions about France’s nuclear deterrent capabilities.
France has historically maintained its independent nuclear strategy, and the Luxeuil air base has played a crucial role in this approach. For decades, the base housed nuclear weapons, but its role diminished after the relocation of Rafale jets in 2011. Now, with growing apprehensions about global stability, the French government is reaffirming its stance on military readiness.
Luxeuil Air Base to Host Advanced Nuclear Weaponry
Once fully upgraded, the Luxeuil air base will be equipped with F5 Rafale fighter jets along with ASN4G air-launched hypersonic nuclear missiles, positioning it as a critical asset in France’s national security framework. The overhaul will also double the base’s personnel to approximately 2,000, further enhancing its operational capacity.
Additionally, President Macron confirmed plans to order more Rafale jets from Dassault Aviation to reinforce the French Air Force, although specific numbers have not yet been disclosed. Earlier, Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu had indicated that at least 20 additional Rafale jets would be needed to strengthen France’s military aviation fleet, which is expected to surpass 180 warplanes in the coming years.
