Renowned French-Indian Sanskrit scholar and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat passed away at the age of 89 in Paris. A celebrated Indologist and grammarian, Dr. Filliozat was undergoing treatment for an illness at a private hospital in Mysuru before being airlifted to Paris, where he breathed his last.

 Dr. Filliozat is survived by his wife, Dr. Vasundhara Kavali Filliozat, a distinguished art historian and Kannada Rajyotsava Award recipient, their daughters Manonmani and Bhamathi, grandchildren, and a wide circle of admirers and colleagues. Last rites are expected to be held in Paris, according to family sources.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Indology

Born in France in 1936, Dr. Filliozat was the son of renowned Indianist Jean Filliozat, who inspired his deep interest in Sanskrit and Indian studies. Over his illustrious career, Dr. Filliozat contributed significantly to the understanding of Sanskrit literature, Indian philosophy, and the history of Hindu temples. His research spanned multiple disciplines, including Sanskrit grammar (Vyakarana), poetry and poetics, Tantra, and Shaiva Siddhanta literature.

As a Professor of Sanskrit (Emeritus) and a member of the prestigious Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in Paris, Dr. Filliozat made significant contributions to the global appreciation of Sanskrit. His collaborations with institutions such as the National Indira Gandhi Centre for the Arts in New Delhi promoted philological and archaeological studies through modern digital tools.

Contributions to Sanskrit and Indian Architecture

Dr. Filliozat was particularly passionate about exploring the connection between Sanskrit and Indian temple architecture. His studies emphasized the cultural and intellectual heritage embodied in temple structures and their alignment with Sanskrit texts. He also highlighted the historical ties between Europe and Sanskrit, recalling how Napoleon Bonaparte’s era introduced Sanskrit studies in France, recognizing its linguistic and cultural richness.

His scholarly works included numerous publications on Indian studies, which became critical references for Indologists worldwide.

Dr. Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat’s lifelong dedication to Sanskrit and Indian culture earned him several prestigious awards. These included:

  • Padma Shri (2024) – One of India’s highest civilian honors.
  • Certificate of Honour for Sanskrit (2014) – Presented by the President of India.
  • Mahamaho Padhyaya Honoris Causa (2013) – Conferred by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University.
  • Honorary Fellow of the Samvidya Institute for Cultural Studies (Pune).
  • Shree Vanamali Samskruti Seva Award – Instituted by the Shree Vanamali Charitable Trust, Mysuru.

Dr. Filliozat’s passing marks the end of an era for Sanskrit scholarship and Indology. His contributions to cultural studies, linguistics, and the preservation of India’s heritage will continue to inspire future generations of scholars and enthusiasts.
