German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has arrived in New Delhi for his first standalone visit to India since becoming Chancellor last year. Scholz’s two-day visit will focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, green transition, and resolving the Ukraine crisis. The German Chancellor was given a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, where he also engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The visit is an opportunity for both sides to gain a better understanding of each other’s policies on key issues, such as China’s actions across the Indo-Pacific, business, climate change, and mobility of skilled Indian workers. The two sides will also explore ways to grow bilateral trade from the current level of 30 billion euros a year.
Scholz is accompanied by a high-power business delegation, including 12 CEOs of major German firms such as Siemens and software major SAP. The visit is expected to conclude with several business agreements that will benefit both countries. The two sides are also expected to explore ways India can help Germany meet its needs for skilled manpower, including through accelerated legal migration.
The visit will be an opportunity for India to have a better understanding of Germany’s policy on the Indo-Pacific, where China’s aggressive and assertive actions have become a cause of concern for several countries. Germany will keep promoting its view of the Ukraine conflict, in order to refute narratives from the Russian side, as per German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.
The visit is being seen as an attempt to persuade India regarding Europe’s position on the Ukraine conflict. Scholz’s visit is expected to conclude with a visit to Bengaluru, where he will participate in further meetings focused on trade and technology. He will also meet President Droupadi Murmu during his visit. With this visit, Germany is aiming to strengthen its relationship with India, which is a key market for German businesses, and to deepen cooperation in key areas that are essential to both countries’ development.
