Shocking Honor Killing in Gwalior Leaves Community Stunned
Gwalior: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 20-year-old woman, Tanu Gurjar, was shot dead by her father in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior, just days before her scheduled wedding. The killing occurred in the presence of police officers and a panchayat on Tuesday evening in the Gola Ka Mandir area. The father, enraged over his daughter’s opposition to an arranged marriage, used a country-made firearm to kill her.
Daughter’s Social Media Plea
Hours before the tragic incident, Tanu had shared a 52-second video on social media, accusing her family of coercing her into an unwanted marriage. She openly named her father, Mahesh Gurjar, and other family members, expressing fears for her safety. In the video, she stated her desire to marry Bhikam “Vicky” Mawai, a man from Agra with whom she had been in a relationship for six years.
“I want to marry Vicky. My family initially agreed but later refused. They beat me daily and threaten to kill me. If something happens to me, my family will be responsible,” Tanu said in the video, which went viral.
Following her video, local police, led by Superintendent Dharmveer Singh, visited the family home to mediate. Simultaneously, a community panchayat convened to resolve the matter. Tanu requested to be moved to a One-Stop Centre, a government facility for women facing violence, citing concerns for her safety.
During the intervention, Mahesh Gurjar insisted on a private conversation with his daughter, claiming he could resolve the matter. However, the situation took a horrifying turn when he pulled out a firearm and shot Tanu in the chest. Her cousin, Rahul, fired additional shots, striking her forehead, neck, and face, ensuring her death.
Following the shooting, Mahesh and Rahul reportedly threatened police and family members with further violence. Mahesh was subdued and arrested on the spot, while Rahul managed to escape with the weapon.
The police have since recovered the firearm used in the murder and are actively pursuing Rahul. Investigations are also underway to examine Tanu’s social media activity, which shed light on the family conflict.
Tanu’s wedding was scheduled for January 18, with preparations underway when the tragedy unfolded. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, highlighting the continuing prevalence of honor killings in India.
