IIM Graduate Reveals Family’s Struggle Over Alleged False Domestic Violence Case
Prathyusha Challa, an IIM Ahmedabad graduate, recently took to social media to shed light on her family’s harrowing experience of alleged extortion and false domestic violence accusations. In a YouTube video that has gone viral, Ms. Challa narrated how her brother’s 10-day marriage in 2019 led to a long-drawn legal battle that has deeply affected her family.
Marriage Lasted Just 10 Days
According to Ms. Challa, her brother, an assistant professor at an engineering college in Hyderabad, married a woman from Rajahmundry in 2019. However, the marriage ended abruptly within 10 days. She claimed that her former sister-in-law frequently threatened suicide, misbehaved with her parents, and prevented her brother from entering their shared bedroom.
“This was clearly an extortion plan by my sister-in-law, her sister, her brother, and her boyfriend. Her sister had also executed a similar extortion plan with her in-laws,” Ms. Challa alleged in the video.
Ms. Challa explained that soon after leaving the marital home, her former sister-in-law filed a case under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to cruelty against a married woman by her husband or his relatives. “The FIR was filed without our knowledge or any investigation,” she stated.
Impact on Family and Career
The ordeal has taken a severe toll on the Challa family. “Five years have gone by, and the trial has yet to commence. This has been traumatizing. My parents’ health has declined,” she said, adding that the stress has also adversely affected her own career prospects. “Despite my flawless academic records, I have been unable to find a job due to the pending criminal case,” she revealed.
Viral Video Garners Support
Ms. Challa’s YouTube video has struck a chord with viewers, garnering millions of views across platforms. Several social media users expressed their outrage over false accusations and the legal system’s inefficiencies. One user wrote, “It’s honestly so sad to see how many men are getting trapped in false cases these days. False accusations are literally ruining lives.”
Another user commented, “This needs to be addressed. The law should protect men too. False cases impact not just the groom but also his mother and sister.”
Calls for Legal Reform
Many online reactions emphasized the need for systemic changes to address misuse of laws like Section 498A. “Why isn’t there a systematic process to punish those filing false cases?” asked one user, while another labeled such incidents as a “new business model.”
The Challa family’s experience highlights ongoing debates about the misuse of laws intended to protect women. While real victims of domestic violence need robust legal safeguards, instances of false accusations call for balanced reforms to ensure justice for all parties involved. Ms. Challa’s story has reignited discussions on the need for timely trials and legal accountability to prevent undue hardship for families facing baseless allegations.
