‘IIT Baba’ Abhey Singh: From IIT Aerospace Engineering to Maha Kumbh
At the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, where millions of devotees converge for spiritual solace, one individual stands out among the sea of saints and sages—Abhey Singh, famously known as ‘IIT Baba.’ A former aerospace engineer from IIT Bombay, Singh has left behind a promising career in science to embrace a path of spirituality. His unique journey from the technical world of engineering to a life devoted to spiritual exploration has captured the attention of attendees and media alike.
Abhey Singh, a native of Haryana, was initially drawn to the world of engineering. After completing his aerospace engineering degree from IIT Bombay, he secured a job in the corporate sector. However, despite his academic and professional success, he realized that the traditional career path did not provide the fulfilment he sought.
A Career Shift Toward Spirituality and Photography
After working for a short period in the corporate world, Singh’s passion for photography, especially travel photography, led him to pursue a professional course in the field. This shift marked a turning point in his life, both personally and spiritually. Reflecting on this change, Singh explained, “During this period, my philosophy about life began to change.” His exploration into the arts eventually gave way to a deeper spiritual inquiry, leading him away from the material world toward the pursuit of understanding life’s deeper truths.
Even after venturing into photography, Singh continued to teach physics at his coaching center. However, his heart remained unfulfilled in the academic and professional spheres, prompting him to fully immerse himself in spirituality. As his interest in spiritual practices grew, Singh transitioned into a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. “Now I am enjoying spirituality. I understand spirituality through science. I am going into its depths. Everything is Shiva. Truth is Shiva, and Shiva is beautiful,” he remarked.
‘IIT Baba’ at the Maha Kumbh: A Unique Blend of Science and Spirituality
Singh’s presence at the Maha Kumbh has intrigued many, particularly due to his fluency in English and his ability to engage with journalists in an articulate manner. His background in science combined with his spiritual journey sets him apart from the conventional image of an ascetic. Singh sees no conflict between his scientific background and his spiritual pursuits, instead blending both in his understanding of life.
His growing presence on social media has also added a modern touch to his spiritual journey. With almost 29,000 followers on Instagram, Singh shares posts that revolve around meditation, yoga, and ancient spiritual teachings.
A Sense of Tranquillity and Peace at the Kumbh
Reflecting on his experience at the Maha Kumbh, Singh shared that his time at the gathering has brought him immense peace of mind. The sacred atmosphere of the Kumbh, combined with his ongoing spiritual practices, has allowed him to connect more deeply with his inner self and the world around him.
Singh’s journey from an IIT engineer to a spiritual guide is a reminder that the search for meaning is often a deeply personal one, transcending the boundaries of profession and tradition. His story resonates with many who may feel a disconnect between their careers and their spiritual aspirations.
