India, China Forge Six-Point Consensus on Border Peace and Bilateral Cooperation
India and China’s Six-Point Consensus for Peace: In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, India and China have agreed on six key points to address their longstanding border issues and strengthen bilateral relations. This development comes after a high-level meeting between India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The talks, conducted under the Special Representative framework, are the first of their kind since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, which marked the most severe border tensions in decades.
Building Momentum for Bilateral Relations
The dialogue builds on last month’s meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan. Both leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in border regions while seeking a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution to the boundary dispute.
During the discussions, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to existing political guidelines for resolving border issues. They also emphasized the necessity of peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to promote the broader development of India-China relations.
Agreements to Foster Cooperation
Among the key consensus points were commitments to enhance cross-border cooperation in areas such as trade, tourism, and environmental management. The meeting saw a positive agreement to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a pilgrimage route of great significance to Indian devotees. Additionally, plans for revitalizing trade through the Nathu La pass and improved cross-border river management were discussed.
Both sides agreed to implement stronger confidence-building measures and refine border management protocols to ensure sustained peace. Enhanced trust through these measures is expected to aid the re-establishment of stable and healthy bilateral relations.
Focus on Resuming Regular Dialogue
The meeting also outlined plans for a new round of Special Representatives’ talks to be held in India next year. This is a crucial step in reinvigorating the dialogue mechanism after a hiatus since 2019. The disengagement process, which saw both nations withdraw troops from friction points in Demchok and Depsang, further demonstrates mutual willingness to reduce military tensions.
Towards Sustainable Peace
As both countries move forward, there is a shared acknowledgment of the importance of fostering trust and addressing unresolved issues. The agreements reached at this meeting are seen as a critical step toward achieving lasting peace along the LAC and revitalizing bilateral ties. The outcomes of these discussions will likely set the tone for further diplomatic engagements between India and China.
