India and France Collaborate to Build the World’s Largest Museum Near Rashtrapati Bhavan
A Cultural Milestone in Raisina Hill: India and France have embarked on an ambitious project to establish the world’s largest museum, the Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum, located on the iconic Raisina Hill near Rashtrapati Bhavan. The museum aims to showcase the vast timeline of India’s history, spanning over 5,000 years, and redefine the museum experience with a blend of heritage and modern storytelling.

The museum will occupy the North and South Block buildings, currently housing the foreign, defence, finance, and home ministries. These historic structures, originally designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker between 1911 and 1931, will be repurposed to host the sprawling museum.
Collaboration with France
France’s involvement in this monumental initiative brings its expertise in transforming heritage sites into modern cultural landmarks. Drawing parallels with Paris’s renowned Louvre Museum—which was once a palatial structure housing the French finance ministry—France provides valuable insights into adaptive reuse of historically significant buildings.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the project’s cultural and international significance, calling it “a very important expression of international cooperation” built on shared experiences and best practices. He further highlighted that the museum would serve as an inspiration for the cultural and historical remaking of Bharat.
Museum Highlights and Features
Spanning 1.17 lakh square meters with 950 rooms across a basement and three stories, the Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum is poised to become a beacon of national pride. It will offer a curated experience that celebrates India’s diverse heritage while incorporating contemporary narratives.
Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat confirmed that mapping and blueprinting have been completed for the North Block, and work is now underway in the South Block. An official announcement regarding the completion and inauguration of the museum is awaited.
Raisina Hill
The twin blocks of North and South, alongside Rashtrapati Bhavan, have long been central to India’s governance. Their transformation into a cultural hub aligns with India’s vision of blending modernity with tradition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently shared a video illustration of the project, showcasing the museum’s grand design and features. This video highlights the institution’s role in celebrating India’s historical achievements while embracing the present and future narratives.
Bridging Heritage and Innovation
The Yuga Yugeen Bharat National Museum is set to offer an immersive journey into India’s cultural and historical fabric. Its innovative design and France’s collaboration underscore the global importance of preserving and celebrating heritage in modern contexts.
The museum not only symbolizes India’s commitment to cultural preservation but also stands as a testament to the power of international cooperation in achieving shared cultural goals.
