India Tops the Chart for International Students in the US

For the first time since 2009, India has overtaken China as the largest source of international students in the United States. According to the recently released Open Doors 2024 Report, 3.31 lakh Indian students enrolled in American institutions during the 2023-24 academic year, making up 29.4% of the total international student population in the US. This marks a significant increase from 25.4% the previous year.

In comparison, the number of Chinese students in the US dropped to 2.77 lakh in 2023-24, accounting for 24.6% of the international student population. This decline represents the lowest number of Chinese students in the US since 2013-14, when their count stood at 2.74 lakh.

India’s Growing Presence in US Higher Education

The growth in Indian student enrollment has been remarkable, with numbers now more than tripling compared to figures from 2009-10. Indian postgraduate students form the majority, with 1.96 lakh pursuing advanced degrees — a rise of 18% compared to the previous year. Undergraduate enrollment also saw an increase, growing by 13%.

By contrast, Chinese postgraduate student numbers dipped by 2.58%, while undergraduate enrollment fell significantly by 12.75%.

Together, however, Indian and Chinese students dominate the international student cohort in the US, comprising 54% of the total, up from 52.8% in 2022-23. Other leading countries in the international student mix include South Korea (43,149), Canada (28,998), and Taiwan (23,157).

Popular Fields of Study

Indian students have shown a strong preference for Mathematics and Computer Science, with 42.9% pursuing these fields in 2023-24, up from 41.2% the previous year. Engineering, which was once the most popular choice, has seen a gradual decline in preference. In 2023-24, 24.5% of Indian students in the US pursued engineering, down from 26.9% in 2022-23 and 29.6% in 2021-22.

The shift reflects evolving academic interests among Indian students, likely influenced by growing opportunities in technology-driven fields and global industry trends.

The findings are part of the Open Doors Report, an annual survey that tracks international student exchange activity in the United States. The report is funded by the US Department of State and conducted by the Institute of International Education (IIE), a non-profit organization.

The surge in Indian student numbers underscores the strengthening educational ties between India and the US. In recent years, efforts to enhance collaboration in higher education and research have led to increased opportunities for Indian students to pursue advanced degrees and professional training in the United States.

What’s Driving the Trends?

Several factors contribute to the rising Indian student enrollment in the US:

  • Postgraduate Focus: Indian students prioritize advanced degrees, which align with global demand for specialized skills in STEM fields.
  • Decline in Chinese Enrollment: China’s tightening domestic policies and challenges related to US-China relations have likely influenced the dip in Chinese student numbers.
  • Perceived Quality of Education: The US remains a top destination for quality higher education, offering diverse academic opportunities and global exposure.

Additionally, scholarships, on-campus job opportunities, and the promise of better career prospects post-graduation continue to make the US an attractive choice for Indian students.

Historical Perspective on Enrollment Trends

The shift in rankings between India and China reflects a significant change in international education trends. In 2009-10, there were 1.04 lakh Indian students in the US compared to 1.27 lakh from China. By 2015-16, Chinese students had surged to over 3.28 lakh, while Indian enrollment stood at 1.65 lakh.

Fast forward to 2023-24, the number of Indian students has reached 3.31 lakh, a three-fold increase since 2009-10, signaling a sustained upward trajectory in their representation within US universities.

A Promising Future for Indian Students

As India solidifies its position as the leading source of international students in the US, experts predict this trend will continue, further strengthening academic and cultural ties between the two nations. The growing presence of Indian students in the US also reflects broader global shifts in education, technology, and career aspirations.

For policymakers and educators, the data serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering bilateral cooperation in higher education, ensuring that both countries can benefit from this dynamic exchange of talent and knowledge.
