Fatal Stabbing Occurs Outside Starbucks in Vancouver
An Indian-origin man has been charged with second-degree murder after fatally stabbing a 37-year-old Canadian man outside a Starbucks in Vancouver, according to a Global News report citing local police. The suspect, 32-year-old Inderdeep Singh Gosal, was arrested at the scene.
Victim and Suspect Involved in Brief Altercation
Police said that the victim, Paul Stanley Schmidt, was stabbed outside the café at the corner of Granville and West Pender streets around 5:40 pm on Sunday after a brief altercation. Schmidt was taken to the hospital following the incident, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Schmidt’s mother, Kathy, stated that he was at Starbucks with his wife and young daughter at the time of the attack. “Paul lived for his wife and his daughter… that was his whole life,” she said, adding, “This man has ruined so many lives.”
Police Seeking Witnesses and Video Footage
Vancouver police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison said that authorities are appealing for additional witnesses and video footage to help determine the motive behind the killing. “There’s a significant amount of evidence to tell us what happened. What we are focusing on now is why did this happen. What are the events that transpired in the moments leading up to this very serious crime… that’s something that may take some time for us to fully understand,” he explained.
“We believe there are people likely nearby, people who witnessed it, people who were in the area who can help us to understand those questions,” Sgt. Addison added.
Eyewitness Account of the Incident
Alex Bodger, an eyewitness to the attack, described the incident as highly traumatizing. “It’s not something you think you would see walking down the street in Vancouver on a Sunday,” he stated. According to Bodger, the suspect re-entered the Starbucks after the stabbing, and all he could hear was people screaming. “Every time I think about the situation, I get this feeling in my chest which is pure fear,” he admitted.
Police do not believe that the two men were acquainted, and Sgt. Addison stated that the circumstances leading to the stabbing are still being investigated. He also mentioned that a graphic video of the incident is circulating on social media, and urged the public not to share it any further.
“If you’ve got video, if you are a bystander, if you are a witness, please come forward and speak to our investigators, provide it to our investigators,” Sgt. Addison said.
