Influencer Accused of Poisoning Toddler for Donations
Influencer Allegedly Used Daughter’s Illness for Financial Gain: In a deeply unsettling case, a 34-year-old Australian influencer has been charged with poisoning and torturing her 1-year-old daughter to solicit sympathy, donations, and social media followers. The Queensland Police revealed the charges on Thursday, accusing the woman of deliberately harming her child to profit from the child’s fabricated suffering.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed by authorities, is facing multiple charges, including administering poison with intent to harm, preparation to commit crimes, torture, child exploitation, and fraud.
Police allege that the abuse began in early August 2024 and continued until mid-October when medical professionals at a Brisbane hospital raised red flags. The hospital staff suspected that the child was being deliberately poisoned and alerted authorities. Investigators discovered that the mother had been administering outdated and unauthorized medications to exacerbate her daughter’s illness, disregarding professional medical advice.
Exploitation for Online Gains
Authorities claim the woman created online content featuring her ailing daughter to garner public sympathy, receiving approximately 60,000 Australian dollars (equivalent to $37,000 USD) in donations. These funds were reportedly raised through online platforms, with the influencer using the content to attract followers and financial contributions.
Queensland Police stated that the videos and posts not only exploited the child but also constituted child exploitation material. The online fundraising platform GoFundMe has since stepped in to initiate refunds to donors.
Police Condemn Actions
Detective Inspector Paul Dalton condemned the alleged acts, emphasizing that harming a child for any reason is indefensible. He stated that Queensland authorities are committed to protecting children from harm and ensuring justice is served in such cases.
The woman was arrested following forensic tests that confirmed unauthorized substances in her daughter’s system. She is set to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court, where the charges will be formally addressed.
The case has sparked outrage online, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent the exploitation of vulnerable individuals for financial gain. Social media platforms and crowdfunding sites are under increasing scrutiny to ensure that campaigns involving minors are genuine and transparent.
