Hamas’ Parting Gesture to Freed Hostages: Souvenir Bags Spark Controversy
Three Israeli hostages, held captive by Hamas for 15 months following the attacks on October 7, 2023, were released as part of a negotiated exchange. The release, brokered by Qatari, US, and Egyptian mediators, also involved Israel freeing 90 Palestinian prisoners under a 42-day ceasefire in Gaza.

The hostages, identified as Emily Damari, 28, Romi Gonen, 24, and Doron Steinbrecher, 31, were seen holding “gift bags” provided by Hamas upon their release. These bags reportedly contained photographs of their time in captivity, a picture of Gaza, and a certificate to commemorate their ordeal.
Controversial Gesture Sparks Reactions
The “gift bags” for Israeli hostages have triggered widespread outrage on social media, with many describing the act as “cruel” and “twisted.” Conversely, some Hamas supporters applauded the gesture. Visuals of the hostages holding the bags while smiling have been interpreted as a coerced act rather than genuine acceptance.
Emily Damari’s mother expressed relief at her daughter’s return, noting the long, agonizing wait for many other families. Damari sustained severe injuries during her capture, including the loss of two fingers, after Hamas gunmen attacked her home. Her harrowing account revealed that she was shot while trying to comfort her dying pet dog, which had been killed by the attackers.
Mixed Celebrations Amid a Fragile Truce
While joyous scenes erupted in Israel as the freed hostages were reunited with their families, celebrations were also observed in the West Bank, where the Palestinian prisoners were welcomed back. The 42-day truce aims to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, a region left in ruins by the ongoing conflict.
The war between Hamas and Israel began with the October 7 attacks, which claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and saw 251 individuals taken hostage. Israel’s subsequent counterstrikes in Gaza resulted in over 46,000 deaths, predominantly civilians, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.
A Path Towards Peace?
This marks the second ceasefire since the conflict began, following a week-long truce in November 2023 that also facilitated a prisoner exchange. While these measures bring temporary relief, the broader path to lasting peace remains uncertain, as both sides bear deep scars from the escalating violence.
