Jasprit Bumrah, one of India’s top fast bowlers, is likely to miss the Indian Premier League (IPL) scheduled for April-May due to a recurring lower back injury. The 29-year-old has been undergoing rehabilitation for several months to treat a stress reaction in his back, and the BCCI medical team has decided not to risk his recovery by allowing him to play in the IPL. Bumrah’s main focus is to regain full fitness for the World Test Championship final in June and the ODI World Cup later this year, both of which are crucial events for the Indian cricket team.

Initially, Bumrah was targeting a return to the IPL during its second half. He was expected to play for Reliance 1 in the DY Patil T20 Cup last week in Navi Mumbai, but due to a recurring niggle, his comeback was postponed. It has been a frustrating period for the star pacer, who has been out of action since September 2021 when he last played for India in a T20I against Australia.

As the rehabilitation process has been ongoing for some time, Bumrah has been given the option to undergo surgery. However, the bowler is hesitant to do so since it is not a necessary surgery and would require a three-month break, which could rule him out of the World Cup. He is currently taking a break in Mumbai while medical experts assess the best way to plan his recovery.

If Bumrah misses the World Cup, it would be a significant setback for the Indian team, given his status as one of the world’s premier fast bowlers. The Mumbai Indians, Bumrah’s IPL team, will also be heavily impacted by his absence.
