Jharkhand Doctors to Strike Indefinitely from March 13 If Demands are Not Met
Doctors in Jharkhand have threatened to go on an indefinite strike from March 13 if the state government does not address their four-point demand. The decision was made after a 12-hour token boycott agitation by the Jharkhand Health Service Association (JHSA), Indian Medical Association (IMA), and five other organizations.
The groups plan to present their demands to the Governor, Chief Minister, Assembly Speaker, and Health Minister. If the demands are not met by March 12, all 14,000 doctors in Jharkhand will proceed with an indefinite strike.
During the meeting, officials from JHSA and IMA also announced an agitation calendar. On March 5, teachers and doctors from Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) will take part in a candle march from RIMS to the IMA Building. The main demands of the JHSA, IMA, Medical Colleges Teachers Association, Jharkhand Junior Doctors Association, and others include immediate action against assaulters of doctors, implementation of the Medical Protection Act (MPA), keeping 50-bed hospitals and single clinics outside the jurisdiction of the Clinical Establishment Act (CEA), and exempting doctors from biometric attendance, citing the impracticality of keeping doctors under emergency services.
Notably, for the first time, the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Lawyers Association also supported the doctors and attended the meeting. The JHSA and IMA will review the government’s response to their demands on March 10 before deciding to proceed with the indefinite strike.
