Jharkhand Elections 2024: INDIA Bloc Triumphs Over NDA, Secures Majority in Assembly

The Jharkhand elections have concluded with the INDIA bloc, led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), crossing the majority mark in the state assembly. The alliance, which includes the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), defeated the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), securing a decisive mandate.

At 10:30 AM, the INDIA bloc was leading in 51 out of 81 seats, while the NDA was ahead in 29. This marks a significant political shift, as the BJP had banked heavily on its “anti-infiltrator” campaign to sway voters.

Key Constituency Highlights

  • Barhait: Chief Minister Hemant Soren held a steady lead over BJP’s Gamliyel Hembrom.
  • Khunti: JMM’s Ramsurya Munda led against BJP’s Neelkanth Singh Munda.
  • Dumri: JMM Minister Bebi Devi maintained an advantage over the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JKLM) candidate.
  • Lohardaga: Congress heavyweight Rameshwar Oraon was ahead of AJSU Party’s Niru Shanti Bhagat.

However, notable setbacks for the INDIA bloc included:

  • Barharwa: Kalpana Soren, the Chief Minister’s wife, trailed BJP’s Muniya Devi.
  • Jamshedpur West: Congress leader Banna Gupta faced a tough contest against JDU’s Saryu Roy.

The BJP faced early losses in prominent constituencies, including:

  • Jagannathpur: BJP nominee Geeta Kora lagged behind Congress’ Sonaram Sinku.
  • Seraikela: Former Chief Minister Champai Soren regained a lead after trailing early.
  • Silli: AJSU Party leader Sudesh Mahto trailed JMM’s Amit Kumar.

RJD’s Resurgence

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) emerged as a surprise victor, leading in five of the six seats it contested. This is a dramatic improvement from its 2019 performance when it secured only one seat. Key wins included:

  • Deoghar: Suresh Paswan led against BJP MLA Narayan Das.
  • Godda: Sanjay Prasad Yadav maintained a commanding lead over BJP’s Amit Kumar Mandal.

Exit Polls: Predictions vs. Reality

Exit polls had painted a mixed picture, with most predicting a narrow race. Matrize and TimesNow-JVC had favored the NDA with projections of 42-47 and 40-44 seats respectively. However, Axis My India and P Marq offered contrasting forecasts, projecting a win for the INDIA bloc with 49-59 and 37-47 seats.

Despite the divided predictions, the INDIA bloc’s victory under Hemant Soren’s leadership has shattered expectations, leaving the BJP struggling to make a mark in key districts.

Implications for Major Players

This election, the first after splits in the NCP and Shiv Sena, holds significant implications for all parties:

  • JMM: Hemant Soren’s leadership has solidified the party’s influence in the state.
  • BJP: The loss raises questions about its “anti-infiltrator” strategy and campaign effectiveness.
  • Congress: A much-needed win boosts its morale after recent electoral setbacks.
  • RJD: The party’s resurgence signals its growing appeal in Jharkhand.

A Strong Mandate for Change

The Jharkhand elections of 2024 have highlighted the electorate’s preference for regional leadership and the INDIA bloc’s development agenda. Chief Minister Hemant Soren is set to form the government again, reinforcing his position as a key political figure in the state.
