Jharkhand Women’s Hockey team wins bronze medal defeating Haryana by 2-1 goals

On Sunday, Jharkhand Women’s Hockey team clinched the bronze medal in the 13th Hockey India Senior Women National Hockey Championship. The team won by defeating their arch-rivals Haryana by 2-1 goals. The match was played at the Kakinada Stadium in Andhra Pradesh.

The Jharkhand team was aggressive from the beginning and Roshni Dungdung scored a field goal in the 25th minute, followed by Reshma Soreng in the 59th minute. In the last minute of the match, Devika Sen from Haryana scored a field goal, reducing the margin of victory to 2-1. Albela Rani Toppo from Jharkhand received the Player of the Match award. Hockey India’s General Secretary cum Hockey Jharkhand President Bhola Nath Singh, Indian team selectors, and other dignitaries encouraged the players during the match.

The tournament began on February 15 with players from 26 teams from various States and Union Territories participating to vie for the top honours. Jharkhand squad consisted of players like Anjali Binjhia, Sonal Minj, Ropani Kumari, Reema Bakhala, Reshma Soreng, Kaushalya Kumari, Sammi Bada, Simta Minj, Dipti Kullu, Deepti Toppo, Neetu Kumari, Subhashi Hemrom, Kajal Bada, Albela Rani Toppo, Pay Dungdung, Elin Dungdung, Roshni Dungdung, and Alka Dungdung.

A brief history of hockey in Jharkhand shows that the state has been playing hockey for more than five decades. In the past, the state has produced several international players, including Sylvanus Dung Dung, who was a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Jharkhand Women’s Hockey team has always been a tough competitor for other teams. They have won many national and state-level championships, including the 2017-18 Hockey India Senior Women National Championship, where they won the silver medal. The recent bronze medal win is a testament to the team’s hard work and determination.

The players’ rigorous training and dedication have helped them win medals and accolades. The state government has also been supportive of the players and has taken various initiatives to promote sports in the state. The Jharkhand government has been providing financial support, infrastructure development, and training facilities to promote sports.
