Man Coerced to Pay ₹34,000 at Ghaziabad Café Scam: Matrimonial Site Connection Turns into Scam

Incident at Raj Nagar District Centre: In a shocking case of alleged extortion, a 26-year-old man from Ghaziabad was forced to pay ₹34,397 at a café in the Raj Nagar District Centre (RDC) after meeting a woman he connected with on a matrimonial site. The Ghaziabad Café scam incident, which took place on December 1, has prompted the Kavi Nagar police to register an FIR under Section 308(2) (extortion) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

How the Incident Unfolded

Ashutosh Kumar, the complainant, said he began chatting with a woman after meeting her on a matrimonial platform. She later suggested they meet in person.

“After exchanging numbers, she invited me to a café in RDC. We ordered food and a hookah. To my shock, the bill presented was ₹34,397. When I questioned the charges, the café staff became aggressive and forced me to pay via UPI. No detailed invoice or breakdown of the charges was provided,” Kumar said in his complaint.

Repeat of a Recent Scam

This is the second reported case of such extortion in RDC, a bustling commercial hub known for its food chains, restaurants, and cafés. In a similar incident on November 25, a 22-year-old student from Greater Noida was allegedly trapped in a café in RDC by a woman. He was confined and forced to pay ₹38,000 for “snacks.”

Following that incident, police arrested the café owner, Rahul Verma, but have yet to trace the woman involved.

Police Investigation

The Kavi Nagar police are investigating Kumar’s case, suspecting a larger scam targeting individuals on dating and matrimonial platforms. “We have registered an FIR and are probing the incident. The café owner was previously arrested in the earlier case, but we are still working to locate the woman involved in this latest scam,” said Abhishek Srivastava, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kavi Nagar.

The complaint has also been escalated to the Chief Minister’s Office, the Superintendent of Police for Cyber Crime in Lucknow, and the Commissioner of Police in Ghaziabad.

Rising Concerns in Ghaziabad

The two incidents highlight a troubling trend in Ghaziabad’s RDC area, where unsuspecting individuals are lured into cafés and coerced into paying exorbitant bills. Authorities believe scammers exploit dating and matrimonial platforms to target victims, raising concerns about public safety in one of the city’s busiest commercial zones.

Need for Awareness

As police continue their investigation, the incidents underscore the importance of vigilance when meeting strangers through online platforms. Residents are urged to report suspicious activities to authorities to prevent further scams.
