Manmohan Singh, Visionary Economist and Two-Time Prime Minister, Passes Away at 92

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, a towering figure in Indian politics and a key architect of the country’s economic liberalisation, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, where he had been undergoing treatment, confirmed the news in an official statement.

Details of His Passing

Dr. Singh’s demise was attributed to age-related medical conditions. According to AIIMS, he experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence on December 26, 2024. Resuscitative measures were initiated immediately at home, and he was subsequently rushed to AIIMS’ medical emergency unit at 8:06 pm. Despite all efforts by medical professionals, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 9:51 pm. “With profound grief, we inform the demise of former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92,” read the statement.

Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Kaur, and their three daughters.

Tributes From Across the Nation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning Dr. Singh’s loss, expressing his condolences in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. Rising from humble origins, he became a respected economist and served in various government roles, including as Finance Minister. His insightful contributions to parliamentary debates and extensive efforts to improve people’s lives as Prime Minister will always be remembered,” PM Modi said.

Reflecting on their interactions during Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister and Modi’s as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, the Prime Minister added, “His wisdom and humility were always visible. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the family of Dr. Manmohan Singh ji, his friends, and countless admirers. Om Shanti.”

Congress leaders also paid homage to their stalwart. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi arrived at AIIMS soon after the news of his hospitalisation. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior party leader Rahul Gandhi were attending a Congress Working Committee meeting in Karnataka’s Belagavi when the news broke. Both leaders are returning to Delhi, as reported by PTI.

The Architect of Economic Reforms

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy as a transformative leader is inseparable from his role as the architect of India’s 1991 economic reforms. Serving as Finance Minister under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, he spearheaded measures that pulled India from the brink of economic collapse. The liberalisation policies introduced under his stewardship are widely credited with opening up the Indian economy, fostering growth, and reshaping the nation’s economic trajectory.

From dismantling trade barriers to introducing market-driven reforms, Dr. Singh’s vision laid the foundation for India’s emergence as a global economic powerhouse. His efforts during this period earned him widespread recognition as a visionary economist and administrator.

A Distinguished Career

Dr. Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister spanned a decade, from 2004 to 2014, under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. During this time, he sought to balance economic growth with social welfare initiatives. Despite facing political and economic challenges, his leadership was marked by measured decision-making and a focus on inclusive development.

Beyond his political achievements, Dr. Singh was an academician and a public servant par excellence. His contributions as an economist extended to his roles as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

Remembering a Gentle Statesman

Known for his humility and understated demeanor, Dr. Manmohan Singh was often described as a statesman who preferred action over rhetoric. His tenure in public service exemplified integrity and dedication, qualities that earned him admiration across political divides.

As the nation mourns his loss, Dr. Singh’s life and legacy serve as a reminder of the transformative power of leadership rooted in intellect, humility, and a commitment to public service.
