“To Err Is Human”: Elon Musk Rehires DOGE Staffer Marko Elez After Controversy
In a move sparking widespread debate, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk rehired Marko Elez, a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employee, after the latter resigned amidst backlash over racist social media posts. The decision came after Musk conducted an online poll on his platform, X, which showed overwhelming support for Elez’s return.

Resignation After Controversial Posts Surface
The controversy erupted when Elez, a 25-year-old Rutgers graduate, resigned last Thursday following the viral spread of his past social media posts. These now-deleted posts included inflammatory statements such as “Normalise Indian hate” and “You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity.” Another post stated, “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool.”
The backlash against Elez was swift, yet Musk, along with prominent figures like Vice President JD Vance and President Donald Trump, publicly supported his return to DOGE.

Bring back @DOGE staffer who made inappropriate statements via a now deleted pseudonym?

Musk’s poll, titled “Bring back DOGE staffer who made inappropriate statements via a now-deleted pseudonym?”, received a staggering 78% approval from respondents, with only 22% voting against Elez’s reinstatement. Following the results, Musk announced his decision with the statement, “To err is human, to forgive divine.”
Marko Elez’s Role in DOGE
As part of DOGE, Elez held significant responsibilities, including direct access to the US Treasury Department’s payment systems, which manage critical federal disbursements such as Social Security payments and tax refunds. These systems processed over $5.45 trillion in 2024, according to Wired.
Elez’s controversial posts, shared under the pseudonymous X account @nullllptr, not only included racist rhetoric but also called for the repeal of the Civil Rights Act and advocated for a “eugenic immigration policy.” He also made inflammatory remarks targeting individuals from India in Silicon Valley and the Middle East.
The Debate Over Accountability
Musk’s decision to reinstate Elez has reignited discussions around accountability, redemption, and the limits of forgiveness in public life. Critics argue that the nature of Elez’s statements should disqualify him from such a sensitive position, while supporters claim his reinstatement highlights the importance of second chances.
This controversy also underscores Musk’s growing influence on public opinion and his unconventional approach to handling personnel matters within DOGE—a department that has undergone significant changes since Donald Trump’s inauguration.
As the debate continues, Elez’s reinstatement serves as a test case for how the intersection of public opinion, social media, and governance is reshaping decision-making in federal agencies.
