Microsoft Announces $3 Billion Investment in India to Expand Cloud and AI Capabilities
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has unveiled a $3 billion (approximately ₹25,700 crore) investment plan to enhance the company’s cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in India. Speaking at a tech conference attended by startup founders and industry leaders, Nadella emphasized Microsoft’s dedication to empowering India’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.
This ambitious initiative will also see the tech giant train 10 million Indians in AI skills by 2030, with a special focus on reaching underserved regions.

Microsoft’s Expanding Presence in India
Describing the investment as the “single-largest expansion” undertaken by the company in India, Nadella highlighted the country’s rapid adoption of AI technologies. Microsoft operates its Azure cloud services across over 60 regions globally, with a strong presence in India’s Central, South, West, and South-Central regions.
The company is also strengthening its collaboration with Indian telecom giant Jio, reflecting its commitment to regional growth. “India’s AI diffusion rate is remarkable,” Nadella noted, although a timeline for the $3 billion investment was not disclosed.
Meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi
During his visit, Nadella met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Their discussion covered topics such as India’s AI mission, the India Stack initiative, and the nation’s entrepreneurial aspirations. Sharing his enthusiasm on social media, Nadella reiterated Microsoft’s dedication to making India “AI-first.”
Prime Minister Modi responded positively, welcoming Microsoft’s ambitious expansion and investment plans, reinforcing the synergy between the government and the private sector in leveraging AI for national development.
Focus on Skilling and Infrastructure
Microsoft’s investment goes beyond infrastructure. The company aims to ensure that India’s human capital is prepared for the AI era by providing training to 10 million individuals by 2030. Nadella reiterated the importance of empowering people and organizations to harness AI’s potential.
Microsoft’s Advanta(I)ge India initiative, launched during Nadella’s February 2024 visit, aims to provide AI training to 2 million Indians by 2025, focusing on smaller cities and rural areas. Additionally, the company’s “Code Without Barriers” program plans to certify and skill 75,000 women developers in India by 2024.
India’s Role in Global AI Innovation
Nadella acknowledged India’s leadership in AI innovation, emphasizing its transformative impact on industries and communities. “India’s developer community is creating solutions that address local challenges and can be scaled globally,” he stated.
Microsoft’s latest investment aligns with its global strategy of pouring billions into AI infrastructure. Last week, the company announced an $80 billion plan for AI data centers globally, underscoring its commitment to advancing AI capabilities worldwide.

Microsoft’s expansion reflects a broader vision to link AI with economic growth and efficiency. Nadella hinted at a future where AI-related innovations could directly correlate with GDP growth, underscoring the transformative potential of AI-powered technologies.
