Sheikh Hasina accuses Muhammad Yunus of minority persecution and genocide
Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has delivered a scathing criticism of the country’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of orchestrating persecution & genocide against minorities. Speaking virtually at an event in New York, Hasina alleged that Yunus was responsible for targeted violence against Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians, characterizing these actions as “genocidal” in nature. This marked her first public address since seeking refuge in India following her resignation amid mass anti-government protests.
Minority Persecution Under Interim Leadership
In her address, Hasina accused the interim government of failing to safeguard minority communities. She cited incidents of temples, churches, and Buddhist shrines being destroyed and claimed that the violence targeted religious leaders, including the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. Hasina’s remarks painted a grim picture of escalating tensions in Bangladesh, where attacks on minorities have been on the rise.
The Awami League leader also lamented the lack of justice and accountability under the interim government, in addition to accusing Muhammad Yunus of minority persecution and genocide According to her, the deteriorating security situation forced her to flee Bangladesh in August to prevent further violence. Despite her departure, she claimed the violence persisted, leaving minority groups increasingly vulnerable.
Claims of Assassination Plots
Hasina also alleged that there were plans to assassinate her and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, drawing parallels to the assassination of their father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in 1975. She described the events leading to her resignation, including the storming of her official residence in Dhaka, as part of a broader campaign to destabilize her leadership.
Her departure followed a surge of anti-government protests in July and August, which culminated in her resignation. She has since taken refuge in India, where she has continued to voice concerns over the state of governance and human rights in Bangladesh.
Strained India-Bangladesh Relations
The political upheaval in Bangladesh has strained relations with India, which has expressed concern over the treatment of minorities in the neighboring country. New Delhi has called on the interim government to uphold its responsibility to protect minority communities, emphasizing the need for fair treatment in cases like the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das. The Indian government has highlighted the surge in extremist rhetoric and violence as significant challenges to regional stability.
Hasina’s speech coincided with the commemoration of Bangladesh’s ‘Vijay Diwas’ and served as a platform to underscore her commitment to addressing the violence. Her remarks have reignited discussions about the plight of minorities in Bangladesh and the broader implications of the ongoing political turmoil.
The accusations and counterclaims between the former and current leadership underscore the deep divisions in Bangladesh’s political landscape. The situation remains precarious, with both domestic and international observers calling for urgent measures to restore stability and protect vulnerable communities.
