Police Investigate Possible Intent
In the case of Mumbai bus crash, the Mumbai Police informed the Kurla Court that More continued driving the bus for 300 meters after hitting the first vehicle, damaging 50-60 vehicles before crashing into a residential complex gate. Investigators are exploring whether this reckless driving was intentional.
In their plea, police sought custody of More to determine if the bus was deliberately used as a weapon and to check if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
More’s lawyer countered that custody was unnecessary, stating that details about the driver’s training and condition could be obtained from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST). The court, however, granted custody until December 21.
Details of the Tragedy
The accident caused seven deaths and injured 49 people, including four police personnel. The injured were rushed to local hospitals for immediate treatment.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis offered ₹5 lakh as compensation to the families of the deceased. He also assured that BEST would cover the treatment costs of the injured.
Concerns Over Driver Training
The bus, an electric vehicle, was part of Route 332 operating between Kurla Railway Station and Agarkar Chowk in Andheri East. It was leased by BEST from a private operator, EVEY Trans. Officials revealed that the drivers for such leased buses are provided by private companies, raising concerns about their training and experience.
Police sources disclosed that More lacked significant experience in handling heavy vehicles, which may have contributed to the tragedy.
Next Steps
The investigation will focus on establishing the cause of the crash and ensuring accountability. The incident has also raised broader questions about safety protocols and driver qualifications in Mumbai’s public transport system.
