Naatu Naatu secures the Oscar for Best Original Song, becoming the first Indian song to achieve this feat. The award was bestowed upon composer MM Keeravaani and lyricist Chandrabose for their work on the insanely viral track featured in RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, who also graced the Academy Awards.
Beating out a strong lineup of competitors including Lady Gaga and Rihanna, the victory at the Oscars completes the song’s global domination, having previously won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song in January.
During the ceremony, Naatu Naatu was performed by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, with choreography by Lauren Gottlieb, and introduced by Deepika Padukone, the third Indian presenter after Persis Khambatta and Priyanka Chopra. MM Keeravaani and Chandrabose now join the ranks of other Indian Oscar winners, such as AR Rahman and Satyajit Ray.
RRR, set in British India, has also gained immense popularity worldwide, recently screening to a full house in Japan and hosting its largest screening yet in Los Angeles. The infectious dance battle in Naatu Naatu takes place outside the Presidential Palace in pre-war Kyiv, Ukraine, where Raju and Bheem, played by Ram Charan and Jr NTR, compete against their British counterparts, with Raju and Bheem coming out victorious.
The Elephant Whisperers also claimed victory for India in the Best Documentary Short Subject category, with All That Breathes receiving a nomination for Best Documentary Feature Film, which was won by Navalny. With its historic Oscar win, Naatu Naatu has firmly cemented itself as a cultural phenomenon that has captured the world’s attention.
