Narayana Murthy Reiterates Call for 70-Hour Workweek: “We Must Work Hard to Make India Number One”
Narayana Murthy Reiterates Vision for Hard Work and Nation-Building: Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has once again stood by his controversial call for a 70-hour workweek, emphasizing the need for hard work to propel India to the top. Speaking at the Indian Chamber of Commerce’s centenary launch in Kolkata, Murthy expressed his belief that young Indians must rise to the challenge of building a stronger, more prosperous nation.

“800 million Indians are receiving free rations. This means 800 million people are still in poverty,” Murthy remarked. “If we are not willing to work hard, who will?” he asked while addressing RPSG Group chairman Sanjiv Goenka.
A Personal Journey
Recounting his own journey, Murthy shared how his early years were influenced by socialism under Jawaharlal Nehru’s leadership. “I grew up admiring Nehru’s vision, including the establishment of the IITs. But during my time in Paris in the 1970s, I was struck by the stark contrast between India’s poverty and the West’s prosperity,” he recalled.
A turning point came during a discussion with the leader of the French Communist Party, which left Murthy unconvinced. “I realized that poverty can only be eradicated by creating jobs. Entrepreneurs are the true nation-builders—they create wealth, pay taxes, and drive growth,” he stated.
Murthy also highlighted the importance of “compassionate capitalism,” a model that blends the efficiency of capitalism with the empathy of socialism. “It is about creating wealth while being mindful of those less fortunate,” he explained.
Expressing his admiration for Kolkata, Murthy called it “the most cultured place in the entire country.” He praised the city’s contributions to Indian thought and art, referencing figures like Rabindranath Tagore, Satyajit Ray, and Amartya Sen.
“I am very proud of India’s 4,000-year-old culture, which demonstrates unparalleled generosity and intellectual depth,” he added.
A Call to Action for Young India
Murthy urged India’s youth to dedicate themselves to fulfilling the vision of the nation’s founding fathers. He warned against complacency, pointing out that a Chinese worker is reportedly 3.5 times more productive than an Indian worker. “It is easy to write nonsense and remain wretched and poor, but true progress requires hard work and dedication,” he said.
Performance, Murthy stressed, is the key to global recognition. “Performance leads to respect, and respect leads to power. If we want the world to respect India, we must perform,” he concluded, reiterating the need for young Indians to embrace the responsibility of nation-building.
