Navjot Sidhu Expresses Gratitude on Twitter After 10-Month Jail Term
Sidhu Released from Jail, Thanks Supporters
Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu took to Twitter to express his gratitude to supporters following his release from a 10-month prison sentence. In a video message, Sidhu thanked those who had waited for hours to greet him as he left Patiala jail.
Supporters Shower Petals on Sidhu
In the video posted by Sidhu, supporters can be seen showering petals on the former Punjab Congress chief upon his release from prison. The caption accompanying the video read, “Gratitude ….. take a bow to all those who waited since 10 in the morning till 6 in the evening, against all odds.”
Road Rage Case from 1988
Sidhu was jailed in connection with a 1988 case in which a man died after being beaten up by Sidhu during a road rage incident. Sidhu and co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu were initially acquitted by a lower court, but the high court later found them guilty and sentenced them to three years in prison. The pair subsequently challenged the order in the Supreme Court.
Supreme Court Verdict and Review Petition
In 2018, the Supreme Court found Sidhu guilty of voluntarily causing harm but acquitted him of the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Following a review petition by the victim’s family, Gurnam Singh, the Congress leader was sentenced to one year in jail.
Sidhu Slams BJP-Led Central Government
Upon his release, Sidhu criticized the BJP-led central government, asserting that “democracy is in chains.” He praised Punjab as the country’s shield and cited Rahul Gandhi’s leadership in a revolution against dictatorship.
Allegations of President’s Rule
Sidhu accused the central government of wanting to impose President’s rule in Punjab, currently governed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He questioned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s integrity, asking why he had deceived Punjab’s people with empty promises and humor. Sidhu further claimed that Mann was only a chief minister on paper.
Criticism of Punjab Government Amid Police Pursuit
Sidhu’s remarks come in the context of the Punjab Police’s ongoing pursuit of separatist preacher Amritpal Singh. As the search enters its second week, the state government has faced criticism over its failure to apprehend the Waris Punjab De leader.
