No Cause for Alarm: Indian Health Experts on HMPV Amid Rising Cases in China

As concerns rise over the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China, Indian health experts have urged the public to remain calm, highlighting that the situation does not warrant alarm. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has advised adopting general precautions against respiratory infections to prevent illness.

Understanding HMPV

HMPV, a respiratory virus similar to the common cold, has recently been reported in significant numbers across China, raising fears of a COVID-like situation. However, Indian health officials emphasize that HMPV typically causes mild flu-like symptoms, particularly in the elderly and young children.

Dr. Atul Goel, a senior DGHS official, clarified that there is no substantial increase in respiratory infections within India. December 2024 data from medical institutions showed no unusual spike in cases. He noted that such viruses are common during winter, and hospitals are generally prepared with sufficient supplies and beds to handle seasonal outbreaks.

Precautionary Measures Recommended

Dr. Goel emphasized simple preventive measures to minimize the spread of respiratory infections. He advised individuals with symptoms such as coughs or colds to limit contact with others and use separate handkerchiefs or towels to avoid transmitting the virus. Basic cold and fever medicines can be used when necessary, he added, stressing that no extraordinary steps are required at this stage.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), under the Union Health Ministry, is actively monitoring respiratory illnesses and seasonal influenza cases across the country. The NCDC remains in close communication with international agencies to track developments and ensure preparedness.

No COVID-Like Scenario, Experts Say

Fears of another global health crisis have been sparked by the HMPV outbreak in China, reminiscent of the initial COVID-19 spread from Wuhan in 2020. However, experts highlight critical differences. Unlike COVID-19, HMPV is not a novel virus and primarily causes mild symptoms in healthy individuals.

China, meanwhile, has defended its transparency regarding information sharing on disease outbreaks, including COVID-19. After the World Health Organization (WHO) called for more data to understand the origins of COVID-19, China reiterated its commitment to contributing to global research.

Focus on Preparedness

Indian health authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance and public awareness without causing unnecessary panic. Seasonal respiratory infections are an annual occurrence, and the healthcare system is equipped to handle such challenges.

The DGHS and NCDC advise citizens to prioritize basic hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, using masks in crowded places, and seeking medical advice for persistent symptoms. These measures, coupled with ongoing monitoring, ensure that India remains prepared to address any potential escalation.

While the HMPV outbreak in China raises legitimate concerns, Indian health experts have assured the public that the situation is under control domestically. By following recommended precautions and staying informed, citizens can effectively protect themselves against seasonal respiratory illnesses. The emphasis remains on vigilance, preparedness, and avoiding undue alarm as health agencies continue their proactive efforts.
