The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), established under the Trump administration and helmed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has been no stranger to controversy. The latest uproar involves the resignation of Marko Elez, a temporary DOGE appointee at the Treasury Department. Elez stepped down following the resurfacing of old, racist and eugenics-supporting social media posts, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Elez’s resignation comes after his temporary appointment granted him limited access to the $5 trillion Treasury payment system, sparking concerns over his suitability for such a role.
Social Media Posts Stir Controversy
The controversy stems from posts linked to a now-deleted account, @nullllptr, reportedly used by Elez. These posts contained inflammatory and offensive statements, including targeting the prevalence of Indians in Silicon Valley. One post infamously stated, “Normalize Indian hate,” while another claimed, “99% of Indian H1Bs will be replaced by slightly smarter LLMs, they’re going back don’t worry guys.”
Further posts from the account included remarks such as “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool,” and “You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity.” These comments caused a public outcry, leading to Elez’s resignation, which was later confirmed by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.
The Deleted Account’s Connections
The deleted account, previously operated under @marko_elez, frequently interacted with a new account bearing the same name. Investigations revealed that both accounts often engaged with similar users and shared comparable content, further linking Elez to the controversial posts.
Who is Marko Elez?
A graduate of Rutgers University, Elez majored in computer science and co-founded Unimetrics.io during his sophomore year. This startup aimed to connect high school students with mentors for college application guidance.
Elez also worked on several high-profile projects with Musk, including contributions to SpaceX’s Starlink satellites and efforts at X (formerly Twitter), where he focused on artificial intelligence.
DOGE’s Ongoing Challenges
This scandal adds to the challenges faced by DOGE, a department already under scrutiny since its formation. The controversy highlights broader concerns about vetting processes for appointees in sensitive roles. While Elez’s resignation attempts to close this chapter, the incident has reignited debates around accountability, governance, and the role of technology leaders in public policy.
