Jharkhand Assembly Polls: Directive Issued For Paid Holiday in Dhanbad

Ahead of the Jharkhand assembly elections, Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Electoral Officer Madhvi Mishra has directed all public and private institutions in the district to declare a paid holiday on November 20. The move aims to facilitate voter participation in the assembly elections scheduled for that day.

In her official statement, Mishra emphasized the importance of enabling employees across all sectors—business, industrial, or institutional—to exercise their voting rights. “So, give leave with pay to such persons on November 20 so that they can cast their votes,” she said, citing Section 135 (B) of the Representation of People Act, 1951, which mandates time off for employees during Lok Sabha or state assembly elections.

Directive to Institutions for Maximum Voter Turnout

The directive applies to a wide range of organizations, including prominent entities such as Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Maithon Power Limited (MPL), ACC Limited Sindri, Hindustan Urvarak Rasayan Limited (HURL), Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), and Tata Steel Collieries.

Madhvi Mishra further urged institutions to actively encourage their employees to vote, with the goal of achieving 100% voter turnout. “This initiative underscores the importance of citizen participation in the democratic process,” she said.

Warning Against Non-Compliance

The DC has also issued a warning to institutions that fail to comply with the directive. She stated that any establishment not granting a paid holiday on November 20 would face action under the Representation of People Act.

The directive reflects a focused effort by local authorities to ensure the smooth conduct of elections and reinforce the democratic principle of universal adult suffrage.
