PM Modi Highlights Need for UN Reforms on Podcast

According to PM Modi, the international bodies established after World War II have become “almost irrelevant” today, primarily due to a lack of meaningful reform. He stated that organisations like the UN have been unable to fulfill their intended roles effectively, as entities that disregard international laws continue to act with impunity. The Prime Minister expressed frustration at the inability of these global institutions to prevent or resolve ongoing conflicts.

Covid-19: A Missed Opportunity for Global Unity

Reflecting on the devastating Covid-19 pandemic, PM Modi described it as a humbling experience that exposed significant weaknesses within even the most developed nations. The global health crisis revealed a universal vulnerability, highlighting the urgent need for greater international cooperation.

The Prime Minister expressed disappointment that instead of fostering unity and cooperation in response to the pandemic, the international community descended further into division and conflict. He observed that the anticipated shift toward global solidarity and collaborative governance was sadly replaced by increased fragmentation, uncertainty, and warfare.

India’s Push for a Permanent UNSC Seat

The Prime Minister’s critical remarks towards international organisations come as India continues to push for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). For decades, New Delhi has argued that the UNSC’s current structure, established in 1945, no longer reflects contemporary geopolitical realities and must undergo significant reform.

India last held a non-permanent seat at the Security Council during the 2021-2022 term. Currently, the UNSC comprises five permanent members—the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, and Russia—all holding veto powers, alongside ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the UN General Assembly.

The Prime Minister’s latest statements are consistent with India’s long-held stance on UN reform, echoing his earlier appeals during addresses at the United Nations General Assembly. Modi has consistently argued that global institutions must urgently evolve and reform to remain effective and relevant.

International Support for India’s UNSC Ambitions

India’s call for structural reform within the UNSC has found considerable international support. Major global powers, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, have publicly endorsed India’s bid for permanent membership at the Security Council.

The increasing momentum for India’s inclusion underscores the growing acknowledgment that global governance structures established nearly eight decades ago require significant updates to adequately address contemporary challenges.
