Ranveer Allahbadia Moves Supreme Court Over Multiple FIRs
YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as “BeerBiceps,” has approached the Supreme Court seeking relief from multiple FIRs registered against him across different states. The cases stem from comments he made during a now-deleted episode of the YouTube reality show India’s Got Latent, hosted by comedian Samay Raina.
Mr. Allahbadia, through his legal counsel Abhinav Chandrachud, son of former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, has petitioned the court to club the FIRs filed in different jurisdictions. He has also sought anticipatory bail, citing concerns over possible arrest by the Guwahati police, who have already issued summonses to him and others associated with the show.
Supreme Court’s Response to the Petition
During the hearing, the request for urgent listing of the case was mentioned before Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. However, the CJI declined an immediate hearing, stating that a date had already been assigned for the matter. The court further advised Mr. Allahbadia’s legal team to coordinate with the court registry for further details.
Controversial Remarks and Public Backlash
The controversy erupted following remarks made by Mr. Allahbadia during an episode of India’s Got Latent, a reality show featuring influencers and comedians as participants and judges. One of the questions posed during the show sparked widespread criticism:
“Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?”
The remarks, deemed highly offensive by several individuals, led to multiple complaints nationwide. A resident of Guwahati formally lodged a complaint, prompting the Assam Police to register an FIR under sections related to obscenity and public morality.
Legal Action and Summons Issued
Following the FIR, the Assam police have sent a team to Mumbai to serve summonses to Mr. Allahbadia, Mr. Raina, and others involved in the show. The case also names well-known YouTubers and influencers, including:
- Ashish Chanchlani
- Jaspreet Singh
- Apoorva Makhija
Mr. Raina, who resides in Pune, has been asked to appear before the Assam police within four days. However, as he is currently in the United States for professional commitments, he has requested additional time to comply with the summons.
Political and Parliamentary Involvement
The controversy has also drawn political attention, with Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske raising the issue in Parliament, demanding stricter regulations on social media content. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology has instructed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to submit a detailed report on the issue by February 17.
A Case That Could Impact Content Regulation
With the case gaining national attention, the outcome could have far-reaching implications on the regulation of online content in India. The Supreme Court’s decision on clubbed FIRs and anticipatory bail will be closely watched, as it may set a precedent for legal action against digital creators and influencers in the future.
